Is free energy possible?

I am going to put my foot across that fine line into loony town today and talk about “free energy”.

We all know that one of the big challenges facing humanity is the need to provide energy to our growing population while minimising our greenhouse gas emissions.  It is no wonder therefore that some people are interested in the concept of free energy.

What is free energy?

As the name suggests, free energy is the concept of getting energy more energy out of a system than you put in.  Many people refer to these as perpetual motion devices, but that is not technically correct because in practice free energy is just about getting useful energy for nothing rather than creating a machine that can keep itself in motion forever.

So it free energy possible?

Free energy has been largely written off as an impossibility by the scientific community on the basis that it breaches Netwon’s 3rd Law.  You can’t get more energy out of a system than you put in to a system.

And who would doubt Newton?  Certainly not me.

But there are of course many people who claim that it is not only false, but that they have actually created real free energy devices.  However, everything that I have seen is not backed up by any evidence other than youtube videos and as far as I am concerned, everything that I have seen is nothing more than a scam or hoax.

So it’s all a load of nonsense, right?

Well, not quite.  It all depends on how you look at the problem.

If you are trying to get free energy from nothing then you are probably wasting your time, but if you are trying to get an effectively unlimited supply of clean energy and get more out of the system than you put in then you are not wasting your time at all.  the problem is just that people have been looking at the problem in black and white and not seeing the real issues.  The practical definition of unlimited is not the same as the true scientific definition, and Newton’s 3rd Law doesn’t state that the energy going in to the system has to be put in by you.

Just look at renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.  They already provide us with clean energy and we don’t put fuel in to power them.  However, is it possible to create a machine that gives out more energy than you put in – effectively multiplying your energy and giving you free energy as a profit?  Conventional logic says no, but conventional logic fails to see that you already have one of these free energy devices in your kitchen.

Look on the back of your fridge or freezer and you will see the coils of the heat pump that keeps it cool.  Heat pumps literally pump energy out of the air (or ground, or water source).  You supply some electricity and then the pump multiplies the energy by sucking more energy from the world around it. Sounds a bit sci-fi doesn’t it? – sucking energy from the world around it.  You can use a heat pump to heat a building and you can get up to about 4 times the amount of energy out as you put in.  That is energy for free!

Hook a solar panel up to a heat pump and the you are really talking.

Don’t get me wrong.  I am not saying that heat pumps are the solution to our energy problems.  I am just saying that we need to open our minds to the concept that it is technically possible to harness huge amount so of energy literally out of thin air.  And with our minds open, we might well discover other opportunities to harness clean, limitless, free energy that we haven’t even thought of yet.
